Corban University Partners with Act Six to Recognize Outstanding Student Leaders

SALEM, Ore. (PRWEB) July 02, 2019

Last month, Corban University announced a four-way partnership with Mountain West Investment Corporation, Portland Leadership Foundation, and Degrees of Change to offer full-need Act Six leadership scholarships to high-performing students from urban and under-represented communities.

Increasing the multicultural diversity of the Corban community is among Corban’s highest strategic priorities. If Corban graduates are to make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ, they need to have college experiences that enable them to understand, discuss, and gain empathy regarding a broad range of cultural and ethnic issues.

But not all students have the same access to higher education, and those coming from low-income communities are particularly susceptible. Due to a wide variety of pressures and circumstances, less than a third of all students from low-income families gain a higher education degree. These statistics worsen for those students who are the first in their family to go to college.*

When high-performing students from low-income communities face hurdles to pursuing a higher educational degree, all members of the community suffer. For this reason, Corban has decided to partner with Mountain West Investment Corporation, Portland Leadership Foundation, and Degrees of Change to offer Act Six scholarships for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Corban will become the 17th university in the nation to offer Act Six scholarships and the third in the state of Oregon.

Dr. Sheldon C. Nord, President, says, “This partnership is an opportunity to recognize students who show incredible aptitude and leadership capabilities, but who may have experienced significant hurdles in their academic journey. The Act Six scholarship levels the playing field and increases accessibility to students who need it most, and Corban University is honored to be a part of that process.”

Students who are interested in attending Corban University through the Act Six program can apply directly to Act Six. The application for fall 2020 will be available this fall at https://www.actsix.org/.
