Employment
International students on an F-1 visa are allowed to work on campus only, a max of 20 hours per week during school time and 40 hours per week during breaks. In order to secure employment, students must first receive a social security number. This can be completed in the following steps:
- Get an employment approval letter from the Office of International Student Support. This will indicate to the employer how many hours you are allowed to work, based on your academic status. (Summer – Students only taking 1 class may work 20 hours a week. Students with more than 1 class need a letter.) You should present this to your employer with your other HR paperwork.
- Look for work and get a job offer from an employer on campus at Corban.
- Ask your employer to complete an offer letter showing that you have been offered employment. A form letter template can be obtained from the Office of International Student Support. (Specific details that must be included are listed on the next page.) The letter must be printed on letterhead and every blank field must be completed. It must have an original signature
- Ask the international office to complete a letter indicating that you are a student at Corban University and have been offered work on campus. The letter must be on letterhead & signed by a Designated School Official.
- Complete a current Social Security application. Social Security Application form: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.pdf
- Go to your appointment and submit all documents.
- Bring the original letters and a letter from the SS office back indicating that you have applied and when to expect your SS card. Give these to the International office to place in your file.
- Take Documents to Human Resources to have them assist with your HR documents: a copy of the letter indicating you have applied for a SS card, passport, Visa, I-20, and current I-94.
- When you receive your SS card, please take it to the International Office and the Office of Human Resources for them to copy. (Make sure to sign your SS card. You must bring your original SS card so we can see it.
