What’s one thing that surprised you about Corban?
I was surprised by how much I grew over the four years I was at Corban. Everyone told me going into college that I would be stretched and shaped, but I had no idea how different (good different) I would be when I graduated.
What about Corban specifically prepared you for this next step in your journey?
I became a good “question asker.” Accounting is a very humbling field because there is so much information out there, and so much you don’t know when you start day one, but I have been able to excel (haha) by asking good questions that help me understand concepts fully. Bryce Bernard prepared me to “Embrace the Gray” of accounting and learn to not let the challenge knock me down but to push through it and succeed, even if it takes a couple tries.
What’s one thing you would want to tell someone starting their journey at Corban?
LIVE IT UP. Corban’s community has so much to offer and so many amazing people. Ask people to get coffee with you and just chat about life. Ask your professors to have you over for dinner, sit in their office, and ask them life questions, not just how to pass the next test. Corban probably has some of the best professors because they truly care; take FULL advantage of that.
Who is one professor who had a strong influence on your development? Can you give an example?
Bryce Bernard. It is honestly difficult to narrow it down to one example, because he was influential throughout my entire four years, start to finish, and still today. He was consistent and he never gave up on me. He was more than a professor, he’s a friend, mentor, and brother in Christ. He is going to be the officiant of my wedding.
How were faith, leadership, and ethics woven into your courses? How did those elements prepare you for life, regardless of where you work?
In business classes it was a lot about ethics, and being a good example as potentially the only Christian wherever you work. Stand for what is right, always, even if you lose the job for it.
